THE CAPTURE TOOL: DECK, CAMERA, AND TIMECODE CONTROLS
Another similar method is to capture from a handwritten log, using specific
times from that log. When I do this, I try to find a barker, someone working nearby
who needs some time away from regular work. This person can call out the numbers
while you type them in. To enter the times, type the number for the in point next to the
Mark In button and tab to the Mark Out entry and type that number in. Then you can
either log it by clicking the Log/Digitize button (on Xpress Pro only) at the top of the
Capture tool or immediately digitize it and talk to your new friend, the barker.
On-the-Fly Capture
Capturing from timecode sources doesn’t require typing or marking in and out points.
You can also capture on the fly, as the tape rolls forward. To do this
1. Play the tape and find the footage that needs to be captured.
2. Roll it back so that you have plenty of preroll or footage adjacent to the begin-
ning of the needed footage.
3. Play the tape forward, giving the deck plenty of time to get to speed.
4. Press the red Record button. You’re capturing.
5. Press the red Record button again to end the capture.
Capture Keyboard Shortcuts
The Capture tool has plenty of buttons, but if you prefer to use the keyboard, the following short-
cuts can be used:
Tab Jumps from one timecode entry to the next
I Marks in
O Marks out
Spacebar Plays the source tape
F4 Begins capture
J and L Moves the source forward (L) or backward (J) in speed increments, with each press
increasing the speed of shuttle
Note: About barking and barkers:Old-time editors like me prefer the number read in two-digit cadences.
Why? For some reason,a cadence helps you remember the numbers more easily (it’s a short number, after all),
and it also appeals to an editor’s sense of rhythm. Why two digits only? I haven’t the foggiest recollection. So,
for timecode 1:03:04:08,it would be read “01 … 03 … 04 … 08.”Now that you’ve learned the black art of
barking, you have something to fall back on.
