GLOSSARY
CIE A
cronym for International Commission on
Illumination (abbreviated from its French title:
Commission Internationale de l’E
clairage); the
committee responsible for international rec-
ommendations for colorimetry. An organiza-
tion that defines color spaces; for example,
CIE LAB and XYZ tristimulus values.
circled takes Refers to method of circling takes
that the director wishes to print during pro-
duction. Takes are circled on camera and
sound reports as well as on facing pages in
the script supervisor’s notes. When referring
to the film, circled takes are also known as A
neg. Noncircled takes, not normally telecined,
are called B neg. These terms are not to be
confused with A roll and A/B roll methods of
conforming film.
CIS Acronym for color interchange standard,
a method of interchanging color values
between color spaces.
clapper The two striped sticks used on a slate
that aid in establishing sync on a shot. By
clapping the two sticks together, recorded
visually on film and aurally on audiotape,
visual and aural reference for sync can be
established on film.
clip Data that points to segments of source
material recorded or digitized into your non-
linear editor (NLE) system.
clip name A name given to a shot used in a
nonlinear editor (NLE) to identify it. Clips
are usually named after a scene and take
number, e.g., “16/1” for scene 16 take 1.
clipping In video, a condition in which the
variation of input luminance signals can pro-
duce no further variation of an output signal.
Usually occurs when brightness is overdriven,
causing little or no variation at the highest
point of luminance in the signal. In audio, a
type of distortion caused by excessive levels,
resulting in harsh, loud, and unpleasant
sound.
C-mode A linear method of assembling an edit
decision list (EDL). In C-mode EDL assem-
bly, the editing system performs edits by
source tape number and ascending source
CMX The most common format for edit deci-
sion lists (EDLs), CMX was the brand name
of one of the first computer-controlled editing
machines and a pioneer in nonlinear editing
machine development. CMX 3400 EDLs have
two audio tracks; CMX 3600 EDLs have four.
Originally a co-venture of CBS and Memorex.
CMYK An acronym for cyan, magenta, yellow,
and black (K) inks used in the subtractive
color process.
codec A compressor/decompressor, based
upon a specific compression scheme, such as
motion JPEG, MPEG, and so on. Codecs
come in both hardware and software form.
colorant A dye, ink, or other agent used to
create color to a material.
color balance The adjustment color signals to
produce the best quality image.
color bars A standard color test signal that is
recorded onto videotape as a reference for
video levels in the program content and then
adjusted during playback to achieve stan-
dardized imaging results.
color correction The process of adjusting film
colors using a color correction system. A
component of telecine and, more recently, of
nonlinear editing systems.
color encoding A numerical specification for
color information, usually device-dependent.
