STILL GRAPHICS
Let’s take a look at some image import settings. If you want to follow along
with your Xpress Pro or Free DV, click inside a bin and select File
> Import. When the
selection menu appears, make sure you select Graphic or Graphic Documents (depend-
ing on whether you’re using Windows or Mac), and then click the Options button.
What follows is a discussion of each of these options.
Frame Size
Frame size is a fascinating thing, especially in light of the newer high-definition televi-
sion (HDTV) formats (see Figure 6.1). For purposes of standard-definition television
(SDTV), you need to know the proper size that Free DV and Xpress Pro accept. The
dimensions of the SDTV frame size can be expressed in pixels. Here is where we bridge
the gap from the computer world to the television world, from liquid crystal display
(LCD) light to an electron beam attacking a phosphorous screen … I could go on, but
probably shouldn’t.

When importing from still graphics, the important thing is to avoid picture dis-
tortion during the conversion. As I indicated, the form of measurement is pixels. The
pixels are expressed in width and height. A normal television picture is 720
×486; that
is, 720 pixels wide and 486 pixels high (see Figure 6.2).
For European and other countries, the correct pixel dimensions are 720
×576.
The European standard is actually far better than our own, although HD is pretty
much the same quality anywhere.
