■ THE CAPTURE TOOL: CAPTURE CONTROLS
Another possibility is that timecode information might arrive earlier than picture
and sound. When using RS-422 for deck control and digitizing picture and sound
through DV, there will possibly be a mismatch of the timecode versus picture informa-
tion. The problem is that the two signals are not transmitting in sync.
How can you detect these latencies? For video, it’s fairly simple. If you are
capturing, and the audio and video look out of sync while processing through a
transcoder, try adjusting the Delay Audio setting; available values are from 0 to 5
frames (see Figure 2.29). If the latency is more than five frames, you have a bigger
issue than a simple processing delay. Check your original to see that picture and
sound are in sync.

Timecode latency is very simple to inspect. Find a videotape with a timecode
burn-in. A timecode with “burn-in” has timecode numbers superimposed on it that
should match the actual timecode on the tape. Or in some decks, there is a switch that
turns on the feature of the deck that displays timecode (on many Sony decks, this
switch is called “Character”) and uses the video output of the deck that includes the
timecode characters. Digitize it. Look at the tracking menu above the source monitor
and see whether the numbers match. If it doesn’t, the timecode needs to be delayed
using the DV Capture Offset window. If you’re not digitizing pictures through FireWire
and using an RS-422 controller, you shouldn’t have this problem.
Note: Sometimes,burn-in windows themselves are victims of capture delay. Before digitizing a timecode
burn-in,make sure that the timecode on the tape and the burn-in windows match.Otherwise, you’ll have a
delay of a delay of your timecode and the problem will not be resolved immediately.
Note: Adjusting DV Capture Offsets deals solely with the issues of audio, video, and timecode being cap-
tured at the same time.If you experience a delay between your client monitor and the desktop playback, you
have to adjust the Desktop Play Delay settings, not the capture settings.
