MORE TRIMMING CONSIDERATIONS
Figure 5.19 Sync breaks displayed on the Timeline
There are two simple rules that I use to avoid breaking sync:
When trimming on a single track (audio or video) always select Center Trim.
When trimming an A side or B side, always select All Tracks.
If you have a sequence with multiple video and audio layers, you have to be
careful when trimming. Even if you follow the basic rules of maintaining sync, added
titles, sound effects, and visual effects can be accidentally slipped out of sync with the
rest of your elements. Although this is technically not a sync issue, the elements will
not occur where you originally intended them to be. This can be especially treacherous
with multiple-layer effects that have been rendered. One bad trim can cause the entire
effect to slip out of sync, which requires you to reposition layers and render your
results again. However, if you undo or reposition the layers at their original point, you
will not have to redo the effects.
The easiest method to prevent slipping out of sync is to add an edit on every
video and audio track at the trim point when trimming the video. In other words, if
you need to add frames on V1, be sure to add just as many frames on each additional
video and audio track. Not doing so will make the other tracks shorter, and the effects
or wild sound on those tracks that occur after your V1 trim will appear sooner than
originally intended.
To prevent breaking sync, select all your video tracks before entering Trim mode
and add an edit. When trimming, make sure that all active tracks are selected. Then,
trimming those Add Edit points will add filler on the blank tracks to match the length
of the trim that was done on V1, preventing you from losing sync (see Figure 5.20).
