Figure 2.36 Batch Capture settings
The next setting is Switch To Emptiest Drive If Current Drive Is Full. When
selected, this option allows the system to switch between drives rather than stop and
inform you that the current drive has run out of space. This setting is a great way to
prevent unexpected stops in your batch-digitizing session. If you choose to use this set-
ting, be sure to switch to the Media Creation Settings tab in the Settings window and
choose the amount of drive space that is to be left before the system switches. Xpress
Pro will not switch drives in the middle of capturing a clip. It is “smart” enough to rec-
ognize whether or not a clip will be able to be captured on a drive before capturing it,
as long as this option is selected. You can choose between 1 and 10 minutes of drive
space left when the switch occurs.
If you’re using the optional Mojo and digitizing uncompressed footage, one
minute of drive space is plenty. For offline or DV resolutions, consider switching at
5 or 10 minutes to ensure plenty of room on the drives for the media database.
The next two batch settings are intended for convenience. First is the Eject Tape
option. Rewinding the tape after digitizing is useful—it returns the tape to the front in
case you need to view it again and prevents you from having to do it later. Ejecting the tape
prevents wear on the tape and the heads on your deck. Although most modern decks are
smart enough to pull the tape off of the heads after a specific amount of time, the drum
continues to spin and wastes drum hours. Ejecting the tape prevents this from happening.
Underneath the Eject Tape option is Log Errors to Console and Continue Digi-
tizing. This option is very useful, particularly when you are not monitoring the batch
closely. When Xpress Pro encounters an error and it cannot cue up a tape, it will log it
as an error and continue with the next clip. If you have multiple clips from the same reel,
this feature can save you from returning to the edit suite only to find that the system got
stuck after only capturing a few clips. However, if you use this feature, you’ll need to
remember to check the console. Once you’ve quit Xpress Pro, that information goes away.
