GLOSSARY
NTSC Acronym for National Television Stan-
dards Committee. The group that developed
the standard for color television in the United
States. NTSC signals have 525 lines of verti-
cal resolution at a frame rate of 29.97 fps.
OCN Acronym for original camera negative.
See original camera negative (OCN).
offline Pertaining to items that are not cur-
rently recognized by the computer, such as
offline media files.
offline edit Usually refers to a rough or cre-
ative cutting of a sequence. Traditionally,
offline edits were assembled on simple non-
computerized video equipment, so these
sequences were literally offline and edited
without regard to broadcast standards. With
the advent of nonlinear systems, the line
between offline and online has been blurred
and defined only by resolution standards
and broadcast acceptance.
OMFI Acronym for Open Media Framework
Interchange. A file format that is used prima-
rily for transferring audio files (but is capable
of containing video files as well) and sequences
from one work station to another. Platform-
independent.
online edit Usually the final edit using the
master tapes and (sometimes but not always)
an edit decision list (EDL) to produce a
finished program ready for distribution or
broadcast. Usually associated with high-
quality computer editing and digital effects.
opticals The separate creation of dissolves,
fades, and superimpositions by an optical
house. A-roll conformed films must create
opticals of all such effects. A/B-roll con-
formed films must create opticals of any
effects that are not lab standard durations.
original camera negative (OCN) The original film
shot on location. Most films are shot with
negative (not reversal) film.
outtake A take that is not selected for inclu-
sion in the finished product. Frequently asso-
ciated with comedic production and
performance errors.
overwrite An edit in which existing video
and/or audio is replaced by new material.
oxide A metallic coating used for electronic
recording that is magnetized during the
recording process.
PAL Acronym for phase alternating line. A
standard that is used in many different
countries (as opposed to NTSC or SECAM).
Features 625 vertical lines of resolution and
a frame rate of 25 fps.
palette 1. A central location for color selec-
tion. 2. A central location for user-selectable
buttons, as in the Command palette.
pan and scan A method of transferring
widescreen images to standard-definition tel-
evision (SDTV), in which the telecine opera-
tor can zoom into a part of the widescreen
image and pan across it, filling the SDTV
screen but eliminating some elements of the
wider original picture. Pan and scan is a
time-consuming and expensive method of
transfer.
partition Dividing of hard disk space to create
two or more virtual drives on a single physi-
cal drive.
patching The routing of audio or video from
one channel or track in the sequence to
another. Traditionally from patch bays, in
which audio and video signals were routed
through cables and connectors.
