DIGITAL CUT
Consolidate Media and Link to Consolidated Media When you have a sequence that is
long, you can consolidate it so that it doesn’t have huge amounts of media files from
the original clips. Doing this makes the resulting media files fewer and smaller. This
option, like the Copy Media option, creates links between the composition and the
resulting media files. Normally, it is used for moving media onto a separate drive
when the project needs to go to another system.
Embed Media This function creates one single file with both the composition and the
media files. As long as you have a drive big enough to support it, embedding is a good
way to keep track of your media. Make sure that the target application can support it.
This makes a nice clean package to deliver, but it definitely “puts all your eggs in
one basket.” It’s a big file that will take a while to create. If that single file becomes
corrupt, the whole thing is useless.
Consolidate and Embed Media This last export option will consolidate the media first,
so that you do not have a lot of extra media embedded in the file; it will then embed it
into a single file.
After you choose a method of export for audio and video files, save and export.
Digital Cut
A digital cut is a method of export in which the system feeds video and audio to a
recording deck. This deck could be everything from a professional DigiBeta deck to an
inexpensive DV cam. Any type of equipment that can record real-time playback would
be used for the digital cut. I mention this because there are so many new ways to
record video, including DVD recorders and mini-DVD recorders. Some refer to digital
cut as a “print to tape.” Either way, they are the same thing.
Preparing for a Digital Cut
When you perform a digital cut, there is a bit of setting up to do. Here is a handy
checklist to get you started:
Edit bars and tone before the sequence begins.
Edit a slate to identify your material.
Render effects.
Convert audio sample rates.
Calibrate the signals going from Free DV/Xpress Pro to the record deck.
Configure your input deck in the deck configurations setting.
Output using the Digital Cut tool.
